Carbon aero parts aren’t just about an aggressive look. Each one is an engineered component designed to manage the air flowing around your car — and, set up correctly, they genuinely change how it drives.

So what does each part actually do? Let’s take the splitter, spoiler, wing and diffuser one at a time 👇

🌬️ Downforce and drag: the two sides of aero

It all comes down to two forces: downforce and drag. Downforce presses the car toward the road and increases how much grip the tyres can find — crucial at speed and through corners. Drag is the resistance that pushes back against the car’s forward motion and slows it down.

There’s also lift: as speed rises, air can lift the car slightly and rob it of grip. A good aero package aims to deliver the downforce you need while keeping lift and drag as low as possible. Every part’s design is shaped by that balancing act.

🪓 The front splitter: it sets the balance up front

A splitter is the horizontal carbon blade extending forward from the lower edge of the front bumper. True to its name, it splits the oncoming air in two: the air passing over it slows and builds pressure that presses the nose down, while the air accelerating underneath creates low pressure.

The result is extra grip at the front axle and reduced front-end lift — which translates to a sharper steering feel and a more stable nose at speed. The splitter is the part that sets the aero balance right at the front.

🌀 Side skirts: they seal the air along the flanks

Side skirts run along the bottom of the doors, and their job is more important than most people assume: keeping high-pressure air along the sides from feeding underneath the car.

With less stray air getting under the body, the underbody and rear diffuser work far more efficiently, and the car effectively “sticks” to the road better. Side skirts also complete that low, race-bred stance in profile.

🛫 Spoiler or wing?

This is the pair people confuse most — but they’re not the same thing:

  • Spoiler: as the name suggests, it “spoils” airflow. It reduces the turbulence and lift rising off the boot lid or rear window; its main job is to cut lift. It usually offers a cleaner profile that blends into the bodywork.
  • Wing: it works like an upside-down aircraft wing, actively redirecting air to generate real downforce. It’s the more aggressive, raised-on-stanchions profile, delivering serious grip at speed — at the cost of a little added drag.

Which is right for you? For daily driving and a sleek look, a spoiler; for the track and maximum grip, a wing is usually the better call.

⬇️ The rear diffuser: the quiet hero

The diffuser is the channelled, finned carbon section beneath the rear bumper. It takes the fast-moving air from under the car and expands and slows it in a controlled way, creating a low-pressure zone under the body that effectively sucks the car downward.

It may be the most understated part visually, but by cleanly “evacuating” the underbody air it lifts the efficiency of the whole package — and its effect multiplies when it works together with the splitter and side skirts. That’s exactly why aero should be thought of as one system.

Two core reasons: stiffness and weight. An aero part has to hold its shape against the air load at high speed — a part that flexes and bends distorts the very airflow it was designed to manage and loses its effect. Carbon fiber’s exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio makes a part both very light and very rigid, so it keeps its form under load without adding needless mass to the car.

One last note: aero is always a matter of balance. Bolting on a rear wing alone can upset the car; when the front and rear are designed together, it stays neutral, predictable and enjoyable.
