🔬 Why carbon fiber quality varies so much

Carbon's strength comes from dry carbon weave bonded with epoxy resin. Three things decide the outcome: the resin ratio, the curing method, and the weave quality. In a premium part, resin is kept to a minimum and fiber to a maximum. In cheap production, excess resin adds weight and weakens the part.

🖌️ What is wet-lay carbon?

Wet-lay (hand lay-up) is the most common and most economical method. Dry weave is laid into a mold by hand, resin is brushed or rolled on, and it cures at room temperature or with mild heat.

The upside is cost and flexibility. The downside is that the resin ratio depends on the technician's hand, so it's inconsistent. Excess resin stays in the part, weight goes up, and under UV and heat it can yellow or warp over time.

🏭 What is pre-preg carbon?

Pre-preg — short for "pre-impregnated" — is weave that already has a precise, factory-controlled amount of resin worked into it, kept refrigerated until use. The part is then cured under vacuum in an autoclave at high pressure and heat.

The result: a consistent, minimal resin ratio, near-zero air voids, a higher strength-to-weight ratio, and a flawless, deep weave finish.
