The good news: carbon fibre is extremely durable and, cared for properly, barely ages at all. Neglected, though, even the most expensive part can dull within a couple of seasons. Let’s break down how to protect it 👇
☀️ What you’re really protecting: the clear-coat
A common misconception is that the carbon weave itself degrades over time. In reality the fibre is exceptionally strong; what ages is the clear-coat and resin on top of the weave. That transparent layer both shields the weave from UV and gives it that deep, wet-look gloss.
Left unprotected, a carbon part can gradually yellow under the sun’s UV rays, turn hazy and matte, and develop an “orange-peel” cloudiness across the surface. All carbon care, in the end, comes down to keeping that thin layer intact.
🧼 The right way to wash
Carbon’s enemy usually isn’t stiff brushes or harsh chemicals — it’s bad washing habits. The same logic as paint applies; you just need a little more care:
- The two-bucket method: one bucket of soapy water, one to rinse your mitt — so you never drag grit back across the surface and leave fine swirl marks.
- pH-neutral shampoo: strong alkaline cleaners wear at the coating over time; a neutral car shampoo is the safest choice.
- Soft microfibre: use clean, soft microfibre to wash and dry; if a mitt or towel hits the ground, don’t put it back on the car.
- Dry it properly: letting water air-dry leaves water spots. Blot gently, or use low-pressure air to clear the beads.
🛡️ Extra protection: ceramic coating and PPF
Beyond regular washing, you can add a lasting layer of protection to your carbon parts:
- Ceramic coating: forms a thin, hard layer that chemically bonds to the clear-coat. Water and dirt struggle to cling (a hydrophobic effect), UV protection goes up and the gloss deepens — and washing gets easier too.
- PPF (paint protection film): a clear shield for high-impact areas like the front bonnet, front bumper and mirror caps, where stone chips and scratches are most likely. It doesn’t hide the carbon’s look — it just protects it.
Together, they’re the best combination for protecting carbon, especially on daily-driven or long-distance cars.
🅿️ Sun, parking and seasonal care
Carbon’s most insidious enemy is prolonged direct sun. Parking in shade or under cover whenever you can noticeably extends the life of the coating. For cars laid up for a while, a dry, cool garage is the ideal environment.
In winter, the real threat is road salt and grime; salt residue can attack both the coating and the bonded fixings beneath it. More frequent, gentle washing through the cold months keeps carbon safe.
⚠️ Mistakes to avoid
A few common mistakes will wear out a good carbon part fast:
- Brush-type automatic washes: spinning stiff brushes leave micro-scratches in the coating — the single most damaging option for carbon.
- Aggressive solvents: thinners, petrol or strong degreasers can dull the clear-coat.
- Abrasive compounds and heavy polishing: they thin that delicate coating layer; if it’s needed at all, leave it to a specialist.
- Dirty or coarse cloths: wiping with a grain of sand still on the surface is the most common cause of scratches.
